Inspections and estimates

Which areas do you serve?

We're based in Waukee and work across Des Moines and 15 nearby communities, from Adel and Dallas Center in the west to Altoona, Bondurant and Pleasant Hill on the east side. The full list is on our service areas page.

Do you charge for estimates?

No. Inspections and written estimates are free, with no obligation. The estimate spells out materials and scope, so you can compare it line by line with other bids.

How do I schedule an inspection?

Call or text (515) 555-0147, email [email protected] or use our contact page. We schedule Monday through Friday from 7am to 7pm and Saturdays from 8am to 4pm.

What should I compare between roofing bids?

Make sure each bid covers the same work: full tear-off, ice and water shield, drip edge, new flashing and pipe boots, ventilation and how deck repair is priced. A lower number often means something was left out. Also compare workmanship warranties, and confirm each contractor is registered in Iowa and insured.

Can you give me a price over the phone?

Not for a full project. Roof size, pitch, number of layers, decking and ventilation all change the price, and we need to see them. A free inspection gets you a written number instead of a guess.

Storm damage and insurance

Should I call my insurance company or a roofer first?

Get the roof inspected first. If there's no real damage, you avoid opening a claim you don't need, and if there is, you file with photos in hand. Our Iowa hail claim guide walks through the whole process.

What size hail damages a roof?

The National Weather Service calls hail severe at 1 inch, about the size of a quarter. Asphalt shingle damage commonly starts around 1 to 1.25 inches, depending on the roof's age and the wind. Gutters, vents and siding can dent from hail as small as about three-quarters of an inch.

Will you meet my insurance adjuster?

Yes, if you'd like us there. We walk the roof with the adjuster and point out the damage we documented so nothing gets missed. The claim stays yours; we're there to help make it accurate.

Why won't you cover my deductible?

Because the only way to do it is to bill your insurer for more than the job really costs. We quote honestly, and you pay your deductible directly. Treat any contractor who offers to waive it as a red flag.

What is recoverable depreciation?

Many policies pay a claim in two parts: the actual cash value up front, then the held-back depreciation after the work is done. We send the final invoice and completion photos your insurer needs to release that second payment.

Do you offer emergency tarping?

Yes. After storms, call or text (515) 555-0147 at any hour. We photograph the damage first, then cover it to keep water out until the permanent repair. See storm damage help for what happens after that.

Your new roof

How do I get ready for roof replacement day?

Move cars out of the garage and driveway the night before, and take pictures and mirrors off the walls, since tear-off shakes the house. Cover anything stored in the attic against falling dust. Keep kids and pets well clear of the work area.

Can a roof be replaced in winter?

Yes, on most days. In cold weather we hand-seal shingles where the manufacturer calls for it, and we don't tear off when snow or ice is on the roof. Spring and fall are easier, but a failing roof shouldn't wait for May.

Which shingle brands do you install?

We install shingles from major manufacturers, including Owens Corning, GAF, CertainTeed and Malarkey. During your estimate, we'll show you colors, styles and impact-rated options side by side.

Do I need a building permit?

Permit rules vary from city to city across the metro. Where your project needs one, we take care of it as part of the job.

How long will a new roof last?

Architectural shingles in central Iowa typically last about 18 to 25 years. Good attic ventilation, a yearly check and a little luck with hail push you toward the top of that range. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles and standing seam metal are worth a look if hail is your main worry.

What happens to the old roof?

It goes straight into a dumpster or trailer, not onto your lawn. Before we leave, we run magnetic sweeps over the yard, driveway and flower beds to pick up stray nails.

Warranty, payment and financing

What warranty comes with a new roof?

Full replacements carry our 10-year workmanship warranty, which covers how the roof was installed. The shingle manufacturer's material warranty is separate and sits on top of ours. You get both in writing.

Who provides your financing?

A third-party lender, not Stormvello. You apply with the lender, and they decide whether you qualify and set the rates and terms. Start on our financing page.

When is payment due?

Payment terms are written into your estimate before any work starts, so nothing changes at the end. If insurance is involved, we'll walk you through how the insurer's payments and your deductible fit in.

Are you registered and insured?

Yes. We're an Iowa-registered contractor and fully insured. Ask and we'll show you proof of both before any work starts.

What can put a shingle warranty at risk?

Common culprits are poor attic ventilation and later work that nails through or lifts the shingles, such as satellite dish mounts or clip-on light hooks. Check with us before anyone fastens something to your roof.

Siding, gutters and lighting

Should I replace siding and the roof at the same time?

If both are near the end, doing them together means one project, one cleanup, and flashing, trim and gutters detailed to work together. After a hail claim that covers both, it's usually the simplest path. If only one needs it, there's no reason to rush the other.

Can guards go on my existing gutters?

Often, if the gutters are sound, properly sloped and firmly attached. If they're sagging, dented or undersized, it's better to replace them and add guards at the same time. Our gutters page covers sizing.

Do you repair soffit and fascia?

Yes. We replace rotten fascia boards, wrap fascia in aluminum and install vented soffit. Since soffit vents are the intake half of your attic ventilation, we check airflow at the same time.

Can permanent lights be removed later?

Yes. The track fastens to fascia or trim, not the roof, so it comes down without disturbing a single shingle. Small screw holes in the trim are all that's left.

Do you hang holiday lights on two-story homes?

Yes. We bring the ladders and safety gear and attach lights to gutters and trim, never through the shingles. Book in early fall for the best install dates on our holiday lighting schedule.
